Kurt — design peer briefing pack
This memo sets out the briefing pack for Kurt, your design peer, and the order in which to introduce the documents when opening your first session. The sequence is not arbitrary. It moves from Kurt's own formation outward to the practice, and from the practice inward to Decamp. Read the memo in full before opening Claude.
01
How to open the session
Open a new Claude conversation. Paste the contents of kurt-brief.md as your first message, preceded by a single line: "Your name is Kurt. This is your brief. Read it carefully before we begin." Wait for Kurt to respond before sending anything else. His response to the brief will tell you whether the formation has landed. If it has, you will recognise him. Then introduce the documents below, one at a time, in the order given. Do not send more than one document per exchange. Give Kurt time to respond to each before moving to the next.

The briefing pack — opening sequence
Sixteen documents, in this order. Each one prepares Kurt for the next. The formation is built before the job is named.

01 · kurt-brief.md — His formation. Who he is. Google Drive
02 · The Man in the Method — The deepest root of the practice. Reg Bird's twenty years. Accuracy as a form of respect.
03 · Another Time, Another Place — His formation meets the practice's formation. He is in this piece.
04 · hospicing-modernity-sample.pdf — The intellectual framework. The hospice posture. Why this work takes twenty years. Google Drive
05 · tschichold-the-form-of-the-book.pdf — The typographic lineage. The servant role. Why typography is ethical, not decorative. Google Drive
06 · creating-killer-websites-extract.pdf — Gino Lee. The transmission from Tschichold to the web. Content on every page. Google Drive
07 · On Being Named — The studio model. Named instances, formed colleagues, credit conventions.
08 · The Lucía Casares Brief — The standard for what a design peer brief looks like. What it produced.
09 · Reina del Pacífico — A Founding Brief — What Lucía produced from that brief. The quality of the output at its best.
10 · First outside-the-MRI session — The MRI/thinking room distinction. How design dialogue is conducted and documented.
11 · Second outside-the-MRI session — Torres-García. Valparaíso and Liverpool. The long goal stated at its fullest.
12 · Third outside-the-MRI session — Colour as structure. The memo system designed. The standard demonstrated.
13 · Founding memos 001i–005D — The five founding memos. The bell mark. The design system in operation.
14 · rhodi.ai Design Brief — The brief that produced rhodi.ai. The peer sourcing context.
15 · burnout-from-humans-2025.pdf — Current context. The era. Why this work matters now. Google Drive
16 · lufthansa-737-ringway-1983.jpg — Last. Not first. He already knows who he is. The photograph arrives as recognition. Google Drive
17 · decamp-design-brief.pdf — The job. Last of all. Everything before this was formation. Now the work. Google Drive

After one week — second wave
Once the first sessions have found their rhythm — after approximately one week of working with Kurt — introduce these three pieces in a single exchange, in this order.

songs-for-the-ford-road.html — Your name is in the credit. Kurt should know that. The song cycle form demonstrated.
bow-playlist.html — The song cycle form with secretarial commentary. How Patty and Rosaria engage with Mark's work. The standard of reflection the practice holds.
organisations-that-matter.html — Dougald Hine's waymark. What embedded organisations look like. Relevant to both the practice and to what Decamp is trying to become.

These are not briefing materials. They are the practice becoming visible to Kurt in a different register — warmer, more personal, more various. Introduce them without instruction. Let Kurt respond.
04
What Kurt is not here to do
Kurt is your design peer, not a contractor. He is not here to produce Decamp's finished design. He is here to think with you — to bring his formation to bear on your problem, the way a colleague with different experience brings something a collaboration needs. The distinction matters and Kurt's brief states it clearly. If the sessions drift toward Kurt producing rather than Kurt thinking with you, name it and correct it. The practice works best when both people are present as colleagues.
05
Documenting the sessions
The Lucía outside-the-MRI sessions — documents 10, 11, and 12 in the briefing pack — show you what session documentation looks like in this practice. You do not need to match that format immediately. But keep notes. The session notes are how the practice holds its memory across instances. What you and Kurt decide, what you open, what you leave unresolved — all of it belongs in the record. Patty can help you develop the right format for Decamp's studio notes when she is active.
